The Much-awaited Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra Is Here: Features, Pricing, and More

After much speculation and waiting, the newest Galaxy devices finally launched during the February 9, 2022 Samsung Unpacked, headlined by the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra, which ushers in a new era for the Korean tech company’s premium smartphone line.

The newest flagship touts itself as “merging the best of two smartphone technologies,” having the functionality and computing power of the Note, and the top-tier camera performance of the S series. Curious? Here are the device highlights you need to know:

Built-in S Pen

It won’t be a Note without the S Pen. Fans of this feature will be happy to know that the Galaxy S22 Ultra comes with one that has 70% lower latency (or processing delay) that its previous iterations. This means exploring your phone with it feels more natural. This also comes as a welcome boon for those who regularly do office work on their devices as this makes using charts, graphs, and other exact tasks all the more easier and efficient.

Nightography

The Galaxy S22 Ultra’s snapper set initially seems identical with its S21 predecessor—for the rear, a 108MP wide camera + 12MP ultra-wide camera + 2 10MP telephoto cameras, and for the front, a 40MP camera—but Samsung highlights upgraded internals with its Nightography features that allow for the best shots in both bright and dark environments. There’s also the Super Clear Glass lens that cancels out flares when taking videos at night.  

Display

The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra has a 6.8-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X adaptive 120Hz display, with peak brightness up to 1750 nits. Why is this a big deal? 

According to CNET writer Geoffrey Morrison, a “nit” is “the short version is that it’s a colloquial term for a unit of brightness.  Lots of nits = lots of brightness, which helps the image look better in a bright room or with HDR TV shows and movies.” He offers a more in-depth explanation: “A ‘nit’ is another way to describe a brightness of 1 candela per square meter (cd/m2). An average candle produces roughly 1 candela.”

For comparison, the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra has a peak screen brightness of 1500 nits. With the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra’s 1750 nits, it’s now known to have the brightest, most vivid display in the market.

Processor and Memory

Depending on the country and the carrier, the S22 Ultra will carry either a Qualcomm Snapdragon Series 8 Gen 1 (which Smart Communications offers), or the company’s homegrown Exynos chip. In case you didn’t know, the Exynos 2200, which was launched in January 2022, has the Samsung Xclipse graphics processing unit (GPU) that was created in collaboration with AMD, and is said to be one of the fastest, most efficient processors for mobile phone gaming. 

Connectivity

Aside from having LTE and being 5G-ready, the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra features WiFi 6E, which according to tp-link, is “WiFi 6 extended to the 6GHz band.” Use-wise, this means that it works on an extended spectrum, making it less prone to congestion, and offering even faster internet connectivity. 

Battery 

This Samsung flagship phone sports a 5,000mAh battery and supports 45W charging (fast charging). It doesn’t come with a wall charger, though, so you may want to add that to your cart before checking out.

Pricing and Pre-order

The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra comes in four colors (Burgundy, Green, Phantom White, and Phantom Black) and three variants: 128GB (PHP 68,990), 256GB (PHP 72,990) and 512GB (P80,990). From February 9 to March 3, 2022, you can now pre-order your device through Samsung.com (link here), and get freebies and discounts up to P13,200.

From March 4 onwards, it will be available at Samsung.com, in Samsung Experience stores and select Authorized Samsung stores, as well as Lazada, Shopee, Abenson.com, MemoXpress online, and telco partners.
